Ayer Tawar Church was established in 1926. It was the first church in Malaysia to receive the grace of God preahcer by Elder Titus Hwang and Elder Philip Foo from China. It has been 70 years since. Both had been sent from China to Malaysia to preach the gospel of the True Church. Many gathered at Lau Wai Yan's house to listen to their preaching. Many were moved by the Holy Spirit. Their efforts were rewarded when as many as 40 people were baptised. On May 6, 1926, a prayer house was set up. Unfortunately, members were later compelled to worship in a house at rubber plantation. This prayer house continued to function under the care of Dn Simon Chai and Dn Lau Tai Kon. Later, the prayer house was again relocated to an upper room of a wooden house. Prayer meeting were held there. During that time, Dn Soon, Dn Chai and Dn Liew helped in the divine work. Members of Sitiawan gathered here for worship. Due to the great multitude, including numerous Indian members, there was always shortage a space.
Few years later by the will fo God, a lady preacher, Yue left Methodist Church, preached to Yew Yik Choy, Dorcas Wong, Fun Kow Chee and Lee Ai Chee. They later welcomed Elder Barnabas Chang, a preacher from china. These inspired early members to work diligently to preach the truth in Ayer Tawar. Many miracles were performed.
In July 1941, a chapel was built on half an acre land in a rubber plantation. This land had been donated by Dn Yue Seng Kit. The chapel was a woonden building which still stands today. After the war, Elder Barnabas Chang left Ayer Tawar for Singapore. The Yew family returned to Hainan for good. Elder Doh Daik Seng took charge of the church for a period of more than 30 years. Preachers were sent to help out in the divine work. Subsequently, number of members increased.
As Elder Doh was old and rather weak, Deacon Silas Tan was ordained to take charge of church work in Ayer Tawar Church and Kampung Koh Church until today.
Till today, most of our members have relocated to towns and cities where they are employed. Thus, only a few members observe Friday and Saturday sabbath service. In 1987, some members suggested that Ayer Tawar church be abandoned and combined with Kampung Koh church. Thank the grace of God, members realised that the church had been established by God and should never be shut down; instead it must persevers till the end.
From 1990 onwards, speacial prayer were held for Ayer Tawar church every Friday night. Under God's care and guidance, current membership stands at 50. The current church building is 50 years old. So far, rebuilding has not been able to be carried out. in 1993, a proposal was submitted. The grant was legalised in 1994. In mid-1995, an application was submitted for conversion of church land from rubber land to that for church. Plans for a concrete and modernized double-storey building have started. Initial costs have been estimated to be about RM350,000-00. May God bless this project so that it can be completed as soon as possible.
